How Forward Head Posture Affects Your Health in Sun Prairie, WI
Do you have neck pain? Here are a few reasons why you might be experiencing it.
One of the most common things we look for in the office is forward head posture. This shows up especially in people who spend long hours looking at a computer, looking down at their phones, driving for work, or just navigating everyday life.
The Trap Muscle and Its Role in Pain
When your head shifts forward, it puts a significant amount of stress and tension on the trapezius muscle — commonly known as the “trap.” This muscle runs from the base of your skull, down into the mid-back, and out toward both shoulders.
As a result, forward head posture can lead to not just neck pain, but also mid-back pain and headaches. All of these symptoms are closely connected to the position and alignment of your neck.
How We Assess the Problem
In our office, we use a posture exam to measure how far forward your head is sitting and how much effective weight it’s placing on your spine — and the results are often eye-opening.
For example, when your head shifts forward, its effective weight can increase by two to three times. That means a head that normally weighs 10 to 12 pounds can start putting 30 to 40 pounds of pressure on your spine. This creates strain, encourages premature arthritis, and leads to degeneration in the neck.
Next Steps Toward Relief
This added stress only worsens the discomfort you’re already feeling. But the good news is: once we identify the problem, we can create a corrective care plan to address it directly and help relieve the pain at its source.
